A serology test is carried out to determine the levels of antibodies in the patient, which may have spiked due to a bacterial or viral contact. The manner of testing involves checking the patient’s blood samples for certain antibodies as exposure to bacterial or viral infections causes the body’s immune system to generate these antibodies to fight infection. Thus, the presence of a certain antibody can be conclusive proof of a recent infection. Therefore, it is possible to detect and diagnose viral and bacterial infections using serological investigation.
